LENNY BUTTS INTO INTERNET SPAT, DOES CHEEZMEH'S DIRTY WORK
---------------------------------------------------------------

By Juan Montoya

It's been a while since we've last peeked into the small world of Brownsville Fire Department Chief Lenny Perez.

You remember Lenny. He's the same Lenny that allowed his underlings to send Station 6 personnel and fire trucks to Vela Intermediate for a Fire Prevention Week presentation only to have a fire break out in an apartment in nearby Coffeeport (now on the stretch renamed Jaime Zapata) that led to the death of a child.

Since the crews were making a presentation at Vela, the fire crew from the station on Old Alice Road had to be sent there, only to arrive too late to prevent the fatality. That resulted in a lawsuit being filed against the city.

Then there was the occasion where Perez issued an indefinite leave of absence as a disciplinary action to firefighter Marco Longoria after he refused to submit to having a drug test performed on him by an authoritative clinic technician but had it performed at another site by certified personnel that same day.

Lenny took umbrage at Longoria and issued the edict. After costing the city thousands to defend his actions, a panel ruled against the city and Longoria is back on the job. His case was defended by the Brownsville Firefighters Association.

Then there was the case of the pet dog adopted by the firefighters at Station 6 that caused Perez to go ballistic, and he personally went to the station to take custody of the offensive pooch. Even though there was a whole station crew there, Perez singled out members of the union and sought to write them up for the incident.

At the time of the incident, a group of Brownsville firefighters filed a police report against the fire chief accusing him of "taking" their puppy. Longoria was, and remains, president of the union and Jorge Lerma, at that time a firefighter at Station 6, is a board member of the Brownsville Unity Council, a coalition of unionized members from different professions. Rico Bocanegra, also a firefighter is president of the BUC.

Perez justified his taking the dog to the dog pound saying that having a pet at the station constituted a "liability."

"One of the kids can pull the dog's ear or do something and the dog can bite him. That's a liability. ... The dog runs around the station. It can get hit by one of the fire trucks."

To say that there is bad blood between Perez, the BUC and the Firefighter's Association would be an understatement.

Enter Erasmo Castro, the self-appointed Head Cheez of the Internet group Cheezmeh who has pretty much thrown the mantle of community watchdog of Brownsville over their shoulders. Castro took umbrage that the the firefighters and EMS department paramedics, previously members of Cheezmeh, left the group. As if that wasn't bad enough, they endorsed Yolanda Begum over Castro's choice of Erin Hernandez Garcia, the daughter of Cameron County Pct. 2 commissioner Ernie Hernandez for Justice of the Peace 2-2.

Then, to his dismay, Castro, who is not above calling people who disagree with his political philosophy or opinions in general, "idiots and "bitches," on his Facebook page, was insulted over what he alleges were libelous statements directed against his ample person on the Brownsville Crossfire blog operated by Lerma.

After conferring with Perez (and getting direction from him?) on the phone, he submitted a formal complaint demanding that the chief take disciplinary action against Lerma for "posting libel and defamatory posts and comments" against him and calling him the "mastermind and exposing my criminal background."

He also wrote Perez to complain that Lerma has "interjected these posts but has also included pictures of a "Fat Bastard" character from a movie making fun of my weight and implying that I'm a bastard."

After informing Perez that he was a taxpayer and a voter in the city and that "I am a resident of Brownsville who at the moment is studying a Masters Degree in Austin" and said he had filed a police report against the bloggers in that city. He added that "if action is not taken by this the city's employer, I will pursuit (sic) any and all relief granted by the law. If relief is not granted I will consult with legal counsel."

As an afterthought, he added in his own writing on the bottom of his formal emailed complaint that "please note that it is also Rigo Bocanegra permiting (sic) libel material to be seen and distributed from this page."

Well, apparently that tickled Lenny to no end and he sent notice to Lerma at Station 6 and to Bocanegra at the Central Fire Station that a complaint and investigation into possible misconduct under Texas Govt. Code Ch. 614 and ordered them to give a statement.

Not to be outdone, Bocanegra and Lerma filed a complaint against Castro with the Brownsville Police Dept. alleging his complaint with the city against the operation of an Internet blog on their own time constituted harassment that could endanger their livelihoods.

Now, we don't know if the Texas Gov't. Code for municipal employees covers activity outside the firehouse, but to have the likes of Perez place himself (and the city) as an arbitrator of free speech on the Internet is somewhat of a stretch. Does Lenny know what he's getting the city into by intruding himself in his official capacity into this spat?

Or will his desire for vengeance blind him to the fact that he is stepping way over the bounds of his authority and calling the operation of a blog a "subversive act?"

We can just imagine the civil attorneys out there with their mouths watering to see what Lenny does and how much they will be able to take from the city as a result of his actions.

ANOTHER WORKER HURT AS A RESULT OF COUNTY'S PUBLIC WORKS COMPADRISMO
---------------------------------------------------------------
By Juan Montoya

Remember when we told you about the rampant "you scratch my back I'll scratch yours" compadrismo plaguing the Cameron County Works Department fostered by Pct. 2 Commissioner Ernie Hernandez?

We outlined how Public Works Director Louis Ara and his supervisor Santana Vallejo have stuffed that department with their compadres, relatives and in-laws, often resulting in material losses for the county as in the case of the Carmen Road overlay fiasco that is being redone today after Vallejo and his crews supposedly finished an expensive overlay less than a year ago.

We outlined the fact that Ara's sister, a former Hernandez employee at Ernie's Fiesta Graphics, is now the receptionist for Pct. 2; how one of Vallejos brothers is in the colonia road crew, and how Vallejo's compadre Rosendo Rodriguez and himself have somehow slipped through the cracks after being the targets of a homeowner's complaint that they were selling driveway pipes they dug up during county road projects.

The complaint against the men were dismissed, according to sheriff department officials, on a "technicality."

We also outlined how Vallejo's placing of inexperienced an foreman on the Cameron Park colonia project had resulted in at least one worker getting injured after the foreman did not follow safety procedures and a trench caved in on him causing severe injuries and resulting in costly medical bills for the county.

We also wrote how Rosendo's brother Ricardo was given a position in the Cameron County Cameron Park crew simply because Vallejo and his brother Rosendo are compadres.

Now we learn that Ricardo Rodriguez is no longer with the Cameron Park crew following yet another mishap involving heavy equipment while he was the operator.

Apparently, Ricardo Rodriguez was given the job of operating a backhoe with members of the road crew assisting him as they worked on roads in Cameron Park.

One of them, one Noe Santibañez, was working helping Rodriguez when the operator lost control of the hydraulic arm and struck Santibañez, causing injury that fortunately turned out to be non-life threatening. However, as is the policy of municipalities and governmental entities, the fact that an onsite accident occurred required that the operator be subjected to a test for the presence of alcohol or other controlled (illegal) substances to determine whether their consumption may have contributed to the accident.

Rodriguez, apparently, refused to take the illegal substance test and is no longer part of the colonia road crew. Now, will the fact that his brother Rosendo is Vallejo's compadre lead to a reinstatement somewhere else on the county payroll, or will county administrators apply the rules impartially on this one?

WILL WE PROVIDE BISD-REJECTED CORTEZ WITH A STEPPING STONE TO ACHIEVE HIS POLITICAL AMBITION?
---------------------------------------------------------------
By Juan Montoya

Some past Brownsville Independent School District board members still remember when they visited the Texas Legislature in Austin with some administrators to lobby against unfunded federal mandates that would have to be paid by local districts.
As they tell it, they were wondering the hallways of the Texas capitol looking for the names of the key legislators they wanted to collar and make their pitch to protect school districts who were having to bear the costs of implementing the mandates from Washington.
Among them was former trustee Ruben Cortez, who said to the group: "One of theses days my name is going to be on one of these doors."
The groups stood in silence until one wisecracked: "Ruben, it looks like you already have your name on a few of these doors."
"What do you mean?," asked Cortez.
"Well, I remember passing a few doors with the word 'Men' on them," responded the other.
In the roar that followed, with former superintendent Hector Gonzales choking with back his laughter, Cortez stood unsmiling.
"Ruben meant it," said a trustee who was there. "He was serious when he said his goal was to be a state rep from South Texas."
Cortez hasn't allowed his overweening desire to be dampened by the rejection of the BISD voters when they ejected him from the board after he and the former majority basically gutted the district of its reserves to cover the egregious overspending on construction projects that enriched local architects and contractors.
In two short years, the district went from a reserve balance of $175 million to $68 million. It was change-order galore on several school projects, the most notable was the Veterans Memorial High School that went from a planned $45 million price tag to more than $60 million.
Then he, along with his fellows on the majority schemed to fire the superintendent, the Chief Financial Officer and the director of the Special Needs Department. In the litigation that followed, the district had to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars ($100,000s) to defend them. In fact, the spending continues as Cortez and his fellows still have two lawsuits in federal and state court charging them with conspiring to rig insurance bids, retaliation, defamation and violation of civil rights.
The BISD, which had been the recipient of the prestigious Broad Award which netted it $2 million in scholarships and the CUBE award for the performance of its administration and board of trustees, earned the unflattering slogan of going "From Broad to Broke" during his watch.
Undaunted, after he was rejected by the BISD voters in 2010, he continued his upward climb into the politics by running â€" and getting elected to â€" the Region One board of directors. After the 2010 census, when the 15 districts in the Texas State Board of Education were redrawn, he saw a chance to advance his ambition and is now running for District 2,which serves the counties of Aransas, Calhoun, Cameron, Goliad, Jackson, Kenedy, Kleberg, Matagorda, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio, Victoria, Wharton and Willacy, as well as parts of Hidalgo County.
Unbelievably, he, a high school graduate, somehow wrangled the endorsement of the Texas State Teachers Association (TSTA) for the position over two better educated and qualified professionals. One of them, Kingsville Independent School District (KISD) Trustee Larry E. Garza R.Ph. has nineteen years of service on the KISD School Board and is a licensed pharmacist. The other, Celeste Zepeda Sanchez, D-San Benito, just up the road from Brownsville is assistant superintendent for curriculum with the San Benito School District with 45 years of experience in education.
She has the breadth and depth of experience ranging from her early years as an elementary school teacher that followed her migrant students to Michigan providing summer classes for these Texas school children to serving as the Director of the Gifted and Talented Program at San Benito ISD, followed by a position as Assistant Superintendent with the Edgewood School District in San Antonio, Texas.
Sanchez holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Texas A&M-Kingsville.
As the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum with the San Benito School District where she has focused on curriculum innovation, technology enhancements, and successful efforts in external funding through sponsored grant programs.
Now, really, what business does the TSTA have in endorsing an undereducated political social climber over these two, especially Ms. Sanchez, who has dedicated her life to education? Will their members follow their leadership over the cliff by voting for the least qualified candidate for District 2.
Just last week the Corpus Chrisiti Caller-Times endorsed her for the the Democratic nomination.

An ad in Sunday's Brownsville Herald, McAllen Monitor and Harlingen Valley Morning Star outlines Cortez's utter failure as a trustee at BISD. Do we as voters deserve to foist this man on the unwary $1.7 million residents on District 2?

God forbid!

Rene Oliveria, Sen. Eddie Lucio, Brownsville Chamber of Commerce giant Angela Burton, Commissioner Jessica Tetrau-Kalifa (with her young astronaut with NASA jumpsuit matching her little sky-blue dress in tow), BEDC's Jason Hilts, the ports's Eddie Campirano, Airport dirctor Larry Brown BISD's Bertha Pena, John Wood (remember him?), etc., etc., all spoke in favor of the company before representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration for the preparation for the project's Environmental Impact Statement.
The representatives of elected bodies came bearing ratified resolutions for SpaceX to know that they were welcomed and loved here.
"Welcome to Paradise," Oliveira said (Was it happy hour somewhere?), giving himself credit for passing legislation limiting the space industry's liability in case of an accident, a kind of rocket tort reform.
"We will soar together," Martinez intoned.
They all downplayed the impact of having SpaceX launch its rockets bearing commercial satellites upon the wetlands, tidal flats, and the handful of endangered critters who make their home in what the BEDC spokesmen call "a whole lot of nothing."
And they all spoke of the economic boost ($70 million in economic impact, 600 jobs at a minimum of $55,000 yearly), the educational component (Tetrau's astronaut child), and the tourism draw that would benefit the area.
"It will ignite an economic boom," said the CC's Burton.
Well, here's what SpaceX is not.
SpaceX's Brownsvile operation will not be related (at all) to the company's operations in Cape Canaveral or to NASA.
It is not related (at all) to the December 2008 NASA announcement that SpaceX's Falcon 9 launch vehicle and Dragon Spacecraft were contracted to resupply the International Space Station (ISS). The $1.6 billion contract represents a minimum of 12 flights, with an option to order additional missions for a cumulative total contract value of up to $3.1 billion."
In fact, NASA has nothing to do with the local project. SpaceX will not fire NASA missions from Brownsville, despite the pipe dreams of BEDC gurus.
It also will not send manned spacecraft to the ISS, the moon, or for that matter, Mars, despite the comments of Bob Lancaster, President of the Texas Space Alliance.
The reason is simple. In order to reach the ISS whose orbit is inclined at 51.6 degrees, the launch azimuth from Brownsville would be approximately 42 degrees, which would take the craft over populated land masses, a non-no in FAA regulations.
"It is exciting to think that you will be able to see the launch of a manned space misson to Mars," Lancaster said to wild applause.
Not to be.
Instead, it is to be a minor launch site where SpaceX will program launches of limited commercial payloads (communications, weather satellites, etc.) for private customers that could include foreign states or other businesses.
All the talk by BEDC spokesmen about Brownsville being the ideal location because of our geography makes little sense. The location of the competing site in Puerto Rico is closer to the equator. In fact, Cape Canaveral, the other competitor, is less than three degrees in latitude than Brownsville (25.9014 to 28.4556) , a negligible difference. So much for geographic advantage.
The other claim, that the rocket grade kerosene (RP-1) to be used in the first stage of the rocket was no different (and implicitly no more dangerous than) "the kerosene you use in your campfire," is also a huge stretch. SpaceX's Director of Advanced Projects Steven Davis put that shibboleth to rest admitting that the highly-refined kerosene, if it was the same as camp-fire grade fuel, would not be used to propel the rockets.
In fact, even the launching of satellites east over water, there is some objection to the craft being flown over Florida's populated areas, or worse, over Cuba.
In the 1961 NASA-Dept. of Defense study of Brownsville as a launch area for manned space flights to the moon, the site was rejected for this very fact and for the fact that "the launch azimuth would be limited to approximately 80 to 90 degrees [imagine North being 0 and east being 90] to minimize land impact of (stages)."
Davis said that Space X, which has never launched from Brownsville (in fact, no one ever has), was confident that it could hit the "gate," or as one skeptic said, "thread the needle," between Florida and Cuba.
"We know we can do it," he asserted.
SpaceX spokesmen have been as confident (if not cocky) in the past when asked about their technical prowess. But if one is to judge by the four-month delay in launching their dry-run to supply the ISS, don't blame some of us for taking those claims with a grain of salt.
Regardless, will the FAA give Space X the Certificate of Waiver or Authority to launch and "thread the needle" for flights out of Brownsville?
That is probably the one question that might prove the decisive factor here.
As for the 600 jobs, Davis said that over a span of 10 years and after the FAA hurdles EIS and the waiver to fly over populated areas were acquired, it would take them a good 10 years to "ramp up" the pace starting with one or two launches per year before the full contingent of the job force would be required.
Until then, we guess the BEDC and Brownsville can continue dreaming big.

BRADSHAW WRITHES UNDER LACK OF SUPPORT, ASSAILS ADELA THRU PROXIES
---------------------------------------------------------------
"Adela Garza's birth and formative years were spent in A FOREIGN COUNTRY!That is not all all she shares with Obama..." Maria Flores,a Jessica P. Bradshaw supporter in Facebook

By Juan Montoya
Shades of Obama!
In what is probably the worst insult a GOP can possibly hurl against a fellow Republican, supporters of Jessica Puente Bradshaw to the nomination for the newly-created District 34 congressional district have taken to the Internet to make their candidate look good using the time-honored tactic: making her opponent Adela Garza look not only bad, but also calling her a foreigner (gasp!).
In the above quote, Flores likens Garza to GOP nemesis Obama while ignoring the fact that Bradshaw has stated that she was born in Matamoros and immigrated to the United States as an adult.
But this is not all that is burning Bradshaw's supporters.
In her ads, Garza has stated that Bradshaw, who lists both an Austin and Brownsville address in various campaign documents, has passed herself off as a seller of real estate (not a Realtor), a "political analyst," and teacher, finding no certification for the first and last occupation occupational experience.
Bradshaw, according to state records, did not begin her real estate classes until mid-2008, obtaining her license possibly by 2009, but then allowing it to expire on Dec. 31, 2010. At most, she must have worked as a Realtor for possibly two years, if that.
Her claims that she has been a "political analyst" for three years is also questionable, according to the Garza camp, since that term is very loosely defined. Are we at Rrun-Rrun, then, political analysts because we comment on these races?
What's left is her claim to be an educator, but again, why not just claim that and be done with it? Anything else is a stretch. At 40, and without much tangible public service experience what else can she do?
When one "Adam Smith" (the economist?) downplayed that Adela had been endorsed by the respected (and conservative) South Texas Property Owners Association, he (aka Bradshaw's husband) charged that the association has in the past endorsed only Democrats, albeit conservatives.
"The (Association) donates to Democrats.," "Smith wrote. "South Texans' Property Rights Association donated $1000.00 to Democrat Congressman Henry Cuellar in 2012. This PAC does not like conservatives and particularly conservative Republicans. Beware of its endorsement of candidates!"
Smith, of course, ignores the fact that the Association had never found a Republican with a platform that was conservative enough for their efforts to protect property rights in South Texas.
"They have no idea what this organization to protect the our property rights," commented Garza in her comments. "And, yes they are bipartisan conservatives which is a very good thing."
At the core of Bradshaw supporters' ire is the fact that Garza has received endorsements that they would have loved to have, coming as Bradshaw is from the Tea party under whose banner she ran two years ago.
Other commenters rushed to throw light on the Smith and Flores postings.
Adryana Boyne said:"Mr. Smith, I can tell you are not aware that many PACS are bipartisan and this one has given money to conservative Democrats who agree with property rights."
Likewise, Fernando Trevino Jr. commented that: "Also, if they're a south Texas organizations (which is in their name), they haven't really had many options until recently thanks to the hard work of many Republicans like Adela Garza...doing the hard work behind the scenes to make our party stronger in the RGV."
It is obvious that the groundwork that Garza and her followers have established in South Texas has come back as support in her bid to face the Democrat nominee for the congressional district, whoever may be left standing.

PETE TAKES OFF THE GLOVES: CAN YOU GUESS WHO'S THE TARGET?
---------------------------------------------------------------
By Juan Montoya

In what is fast becoming a war of attrition, Constable for Pct. 2 Pete Avila has come out firing with ads in the local daily that has many of its readers wondering which of his three opponents in the Democratic primary he is referring to.
In the ad with the headline: "QUESTIONS THE PUBLIC SHOULD ASK ALL PCT. 2 CONSTABLE CANDIDATES", Avila challenged all three candidates to take a polygraph (lie detector) tests along with a blood test "to assure the public that the integrity of our law enforcement officers."
Among the questions he asked were:

1. Have you ever taken a bribe?
2. Have you ever fixed a case?
3 Are you under investigation by any federal agency?
4. Have you ever extorted money?
5. Are you being investigated in relation to the Limas corruption case?
6. Have you ever had you license to carry a firearm revoked?
7. Have you ever used illegal drugs while holding public office?
8. Have you ever received hush money to protect eight-liners?
9. Have you ever protected any drug dealers?
10. Are you one of the investigators for Armando Villalobos’ office being investigated for extorting eight-liners?
11. Have you ever been forced to resign or terminated by the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department?

"THE VOTERS NEED AND DESERVE TO KNOW THE TRUTH! I WILL WILLINGLY ANSWER THE SAME QUESTIONS. WILL MY OPPONENTS?" the ad screams.
Now, we've seen the ads put out by some of the candidates in this race and for the most part, they are content to state their qualifications and some of their accomplishments as law enforcement professionals.
This is new for a constable's race and we tend to associate this type of thing with, say, a sheriff's race or some other higher position. But Avila apparently thinks that voters will recall some accusations against one specific opponent. The last time he ran he was in a runoff election with Abel Gomez, so some of the questions asked might be pointed in Abel's direction.
The comments on the ad were swift, however.
One commenter said: "Polygraph tests can at times be a waste of money and resources. If Mr. Avila wants to pay for all the candidates to receive the polygraph, he should by all means do it. However, I doubt even Mr. Pete Avila would pass it."
Another said: "Most people don't vote, much less compare candidates credentials. For Pete to be this confident... he knows something we don't. And he is right."
What next in this race? Maybe they'll name names next?

GUILT BY ASSOCIATION: THE NEW MASSO TACTIC IN PRIMARY

Of course, Gus Garza, a Republican isn't even mentioned, so apparently Masso doesn't see him as a potential threat to his candidacy.

But just as the illegal campaign leaflet has no political disclaimer, it would also be reasonable to ask whether only the three DA candidates named â€" DeFord, Saenz, and Mattingly â€" are the only local attorneys who have been contracted as special prosecutors. But that would probably defeat the purpose of the hoja, we imagine.

If Masso did not authorize the printing and surreptitious distribution of this missive, he might do himself a favor and distance himself from it and call on whoever is doing this to do him no favors.

Of course, he might say that as part of the conspiracy to make him look bad, someone might have done this just to cast suspicion upon his innocent self.

Yeah, right!

PRISON GANG CALLS HIT ON DE FORD, MASSO BUSHWACKS HER IN P.I., SAENZ HOUNDED BY CHEEZMEH
---------------------------------------------------------------
By Juan Montoya

State and county law enforcement authorities are investigating an apparent call for a hit by a prison gang on an assistant Cameron County District Attorney and a Texas ranger investigator who they feel are responsible for convicting one of their leaders and putting him in the state penitentiary.

According to law enforcement sources, prison authorities in Hunstville intercepted a letter from a Mexican Mafia chieftain who was tried last year by Ass. D.A. Maria De Ford and an unnamed Texas Ranger that resulted in a lengthy prison sentence for the prison gang leader.

The letter sent by the Huntsville prisoner was written in code and the message was written in graffiti but authorities were able to identify the message that "Rinche and the ADA" must be "taught a lesson."

When prison authorities intercepted the letter, it was addressed to another gang member who had recently been released from jail after serving his sentence for unrelated offenses. Suspiciously, that same released gang member had reportedly attempted to reach De Ford by telephone, ostensibly to thank her in person for not demanding the court him a more lengthy sentence.

The payoff for the hit, according to sources, was to be some $250,000 for both De Ford and the Ranger.

Cameron County DA sources say that the gang member released called De Ford on her private cell phone and once at the courthouse office number on Harrison Street and actually got to talk to her telling her that he was at the time inside the courthouse and wanted to meet her personally and talk to her to express his gratitude.

"Maria immediately called the sheriff and the Rangers and they looked for the man," they said. "Eventually, when they found him, he said he knew nothing about the hit."

However, the Ranger in question who had been the investigator in the case traveled to Huntsville to interview some prisoners and learned that the going rate for a hit on a lawman by the gang was $250,000, too much of a coincidence for comfort.

However, even though the sheriff and the Ranger made the evidence available to Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos to see whether grounds existed to prosecute the conspirators and thwart the plot, the DA has declined so far to pursue the matter.

"I would think that if someone threatened to put a hit out on one of your assistants or on a Ranger, the DA wouldn't hesitate to act on it," said a law enforcement source. "Maybe Armando is too caught up with his own legal problems and didn't give this information the importance it deserved."

He would not say whether the sheriff's department had provided surveillance or other protection to De Ford, who is one of three Democratic candidates for D.A.

Contacted as she made the rounds of the courthouse during early voting, De Ford said she could neither confirm nor deny and directed questions to the sheriff's department. A spokesman said he could not comment on the status of any investigation.

Whether Villalobos or De Ford want it or not, voters in Port Isabel have told the Rrun-Rrun that Carlos Masso supporters are passing out fliers there indicating that De Ford has the endorsement of Judge Leonel Alejandron, Villalobos and Cameron County Democratic Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa.

Alejandro, a sitting judge, is prohibited by law from endorsing any candidate, and Hinojosa, the chairman of the party would not take sides with candidates from his own party for the same position. To have Villalobos openly endorsing a candidate for DA over the other two candidates â€" Masso and Luis Saenz, who were also on his staff â€" defies belief.

Meanwhile, streetwalkers for a group called Cheezmeh continues to paste fliers against Saenz on car windows warning voters to "Beware" of supporting the former DA. The group, which is openly supporting Masso in the race after veiling their preference for him over the other candidates, recently ran the same ad in the newspaper and in their Facebook page.

Recently, they sent campaign workers distributing the fliers in north Brownsville neighborhoods.

Saenz has not openly responded to the group's charges, though local blogs, including this one, have pointed out that the principals in the group have either been convicted of theft in the past are are currently being accused of deceiving people with immigration problems and filling out immigration forms for a fee when they are not certified to do so. Their accusers also charge them with violating RICO statues, the act which punishes the operation of a continuing criminal enterprise.

"Has de ver como se arden los demas."

for her part, Aguilar is a one-candidate promoter. She said she is there at the behest of Rene Oliveira, now in his 28th year in office.

"I don;t look as if he's been there too long," she said with her practised stock answer. "If you go to a surgeon would you rather go to one with 28 years of practice or to someone who just got his medical license?"

There, is of course, no arguing with a politiquera and Aguilar seems to be poised to inherit the role that herminia doesn't seem ready to relinquish.

Recently, before early voting, Becerra fell ill and was hospitalized for a fungus infection to her bronchial tubes. She vowed then she would be there when the "votaciones" began. Apparently, she has made good on her threats.

"Yo le ayudo much a la gente, mijo," she says earnestly. "Eso les da envidia."

Aguilar, obviously relishing the attention Becerra attracts, claims that Herminia and she have hit it off grandly.

"Ya me adopto," she said beaming.

Just as Herminia an Aguilar are in front of the courthouse, there are many others in front of the early voting sites all across Cameron County communities trying to sway the voters to cast their ballots for their candidates. It's fairly much a South Texas tradition that will probably last while Becerra and Aguilar are around.

CHEEZMEH DROPS THE PRETENSE: WITH ERIN HERNANDEZ AND MASSO ALL ALONG DUPING THE GULLIBLE
---------------------------------------------------------------

By Juan Montoya

With the start of early voting, the ringleaders at Cheezemh are are discarding the pretense that they have been honest brokers and abandoned the charade that their forums or for-a-slight-fee "debates" were anything but a stage to prop up their candidates and set up the others who attended unaware that there was a pr-set agenda to these meets.

Erasmo Castro, who goes by the name (aka) of head Cheez, lamented the fact that the group (or whatever is left of his followers) could not continue to focus on the issues and instead had to choose and endorse particular candidates for public office.

He predicted that his courageous stand would be ridiculed by bloggers and commenters on the blogs.

"I am sure the bloggers and Zekeee are going to have a field day with this post, but if you know me at all you know that the Cheez is not moved by what idiots post on their blogs or what worst idiots post anonymously there. I hereby ask that we unite and support not only Erin Hernandez Garcia for Justice of the Peace, but also to support Carlos Masso as the Democratic candidate for District Attorney of Cameron County."

Well, for once he was right.

Those of us who have been raised here and have been involved in local politics have seen interest groups for pay like Cheezmeh come and go. They stay until the pickings are no longer ripe and disappear like a flash in the pan.

Erasmo says that he will gladly take claim for the group's "triumphs" in electing the likes of city commissioner Jessica Tetrau-Kalifa and John Villarreal. Are you sure you want to take credit for electing a commissioner who tarnished the people's office by getting involved in at least five case of domestic violence, only to escape prosecution when Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos refused to prosecute? Well, we know how that office has worked, don't we?

And while we're at it, another feather that Erasmo is claiming for his cap is that of electing Villarreal. Well, Johnny boy showed his true colors as a patriot and defender of American freedoms when he insisted that the city administration remove the Citizens Against Voter Abuse (CAVA) booth from the EarthFest celebrations.

Apparently, while in the shadows of the federal courthouse where the U.S. Constitution and our Bill of Rights are defended, Villarreal disdainfully deprived the group of its First Amendment rights with one arrogant swoop.

Even her American flag was removed at his insistence. How dare American citizens display the flag while fighting against the abuse of the right to have fair elections? What will they want next, freedom of religion?

And these are the candidates that Cheezmeh and the Head Cheez want to take credit for foisting upon our citizenry?

What are we to think of their support for Erin Hernandez Garcia and Carlos Masso?

Come off it. There is not patriotism, community grass roots sentiment or any groundswell for these endorsements. It's money and self-interest, pure and simple.

When Masso gave them money, they turned on Luis Saenz with a vengeance, running ads unearthed from 17 years ago against him. And Cheezmeh has always been in the pocket (and taking from it) of the Hernandez clan.

So when the group holds "forums" and "debates" to lure the gullible, there has always been a hidden agenda working behind the scenes to conceal the real intentions of the leaders of this group from the unsuspecting public.

So call whoever is not lured by your siren song "idiots."And you can say that (as you did about Mary Helen CAVA), that she's full of "sh_t," or whatever other sobriquets they use in Austin, or East Texas.

But for someone like Castro, who has been convicted of felony theft once, and then not once, but twice, convicted of theft by check and has had poor Mexican-Americans and Mexican immigrants charge in federal court that he and some of his relatives (sister Linda, for example) took their money under false pretenses and are operating a continuing criminal enterprise (RICO) slur the name of a local candidate like Saenz who was never been charged or convicted of anything, is absurd.

In crititicizing Saenz's candidacy, Erasmo â€" Mr. Right â€" said Saenz was the "wrong" candidate.

Then, in their campaign against Begum â€" an opponent of their favorite Erin Hernandez â€"she is ridiculed for having an accent and her having received her education in Mexico. Do you people know where you are? Are you aware that the majority of us living here have friends or relatives in Mexico who do not speak perfect English and who have received their education in Mexico before they came here?

If you want to emphasize the fact that Erin is an attorney, well, she should know better than to be a treasurer for a candidate for political office (Villarreal) when holding a judicial position (magistrate in Primera). It's not only lends her office to a political candidate, but also compromises the integrity of the office.

And remember that it was Erin, after all, that defended the Herandez's harvesting of politiquera votes when Ruben Peña dragged them into court. Oh, we get it now! Could it be that Villarreal, a Hernandez supporter, took offense that Mary Helen might be talking about Erin and his pals Ernie and Norma?
And it was Erin who has maintained the legal farce that her dad's vending machine contract with the county is legit because, you see, he doesn't own the company. Erin became the owner on the county contract when he became commissioner, and now that she is a candidate for JP, her mother Norma suddenly became the legal owner.

It's legal, we guess. But does that make it right? Is that the legal experience we deserve?

Sorry Erasmo, but it is you and your followers who are all "wrong."

ERIN MAKES FRIENDS WITH BEGUM'S CONTENTIOUS LONG LOST WOULD-BE IN-LAW
---------------------------------------------------------------
By Juan Montoya
The fray for the Democratic nomination for Justice of the Peace 2-2 has taken a nasty turn toward the sleazy.
Prominent among tose running is local artist and businesswoman Yolanda Begu. One of her opponents in none other than the daughter of Pct. 2 commissioner Ernie Hernandez, who has gained notoriety for drawing large numbers of mail-in votes, often harvested from elderly voters who turn over their ballots to his wife Norma and other Hernandez operatives.
Now, Jim Barton, of http://www.meanmisterbrownsvilleblogspot/ is telling us that the Hernandezs have another ally in the former mate (not wife) of the adopted son of Mike Begum, both men now deceased.
That woman is Josephina Canales Auten, whose Facebook alias is Scarlett O'Hara.
Although reportedly residing in Houston, she has been seen attending events promoting Erin Herandez's candidacy against Begum.
Begum supporters say that after Yolanda declared her candidacy for JP, Canales resurfaced and allegedly sought to extort money from the Begums, threatening to say nasty things about them otherwise. On several posting on her page, she urged the candidate to meet with her, offering to meet and discuss the welfare of her grandchildren.
However, neither Begum nor her family took the bait and instead are saying that they are in the process of seeking legal action against the woman.
Alex Begum, Yolanda's son and an attorney, stated in a email to Rrun-Rrun stated that: "She claims to have gone to Harvard on her Facebook, although she never attended this college and does not have a college degree. This lady has a long and sordid history.
Recently, she attempted to extort my mother by sending her a Facebook message. She said that if my mother did not pay her, she would bad mouth her on the Internet. Of course, my mother refused to pay her one single penny!
We are in the process of reporting her actions to the authorities and looking at additional legal options."
There is a lawsuit filed in a Harris County court where a judge issued a restraining order against her communicating with a married man who claims he had affair with her and she was not threatening to email compromising pictures and videos to his family and business associates if he did not pay her money.
A copy of that case filed late last year is titled Hart Eugene Schleicher vs. Josephina Canales Auten, Cause No. 2011-74258, 165th Judicial District Court, Harris County, Texas.
Do the Hernandez know the history of their latest convert, or do they even care?

Well, it wasn't exactly paving, but more of a rural road upgrade using Texas Department of Transportation "millings," the name given to the asphalt when the department scarifies existing highways.
At one time, the TDOT used to give the millings away, but now it sells them to the county for $10 a ton, still a good deal.
Unable to give a good explanation of why the road project had failed miserably, Ara blamed the quality of the TDOT millings. In other words, the material was no good. Perhaps someone should alert the TDOT managers that they are selling shoddy material. Funny how it worked fine before.
Ara brought in supervisor Santana Vallejo to oversee the work. To seasoned Public Works employees, that alone caused red flags to go up. Something was bound to go wrong. And, now that the county has to go back and correct the mess, their suspicions were proved right.
You remember Vallejo, he used to to be streets supervisor with the City of Brownsville until management sniffed out something wrong with their neighborhood sidewalk program. Apparently, some of the cement being delivered to the program somehow found its way out of the city and ended up being used by individuals who then sold it to homeowners for driveways and sidewalks.
And just last year, a homeowner's complaint in rural Olmito filed with the Cameron County's Sheriff Department charged that Vallejo and his compadre Rosendo Rodriguez had sold them driveway pipes they were replacing as they performed ditchwork on the roads and keeping the money for themselves.
Sheriff Dept. officials said that the complaint against the two were dismissed on a "technicality," but insiders say that aggressive defense attorneys for the men scared them into withdrawing their charges telling them they were just as guilty as their clients because they knew the pipes were not legitimately acquired.
With the charges withdrawn, the men returned to their positions free and cleared.
And it just so happens that Rosendo's brother, Ricardo, is also working for the county in the colonia grants section and mostly in Cameron Park. Ara put that crew under the supervision of inexperienced supervisor and one of his (Ara's) favorites, foreman Ruben Gonzalez, who showed immediately upon arrival at the project that he didn't know his keister from a bar ditch.
He had workers climb into deep trenches without the OSHA-mandated protection for workers in sloping ditches. OSHA mandates that entities doing the work may use a trench box or shield that is either designed or approved by a registered professional engineer or is based on tabulated data prepared or approved by a registered professional engineer. Well, our Mr. Gonzalez knew nothing of this and had the workers climb into the trenches without the required protection. One, Javier Mendoza (Nuco), had the misfortune of suffering the predicable: the trench collapsed and trapped him under tons of dirt. He suffered serious injuries including damage to his internal organs and has now been declared disabled and can no longer work. As an afterthought, Ara suspended his appointee as foreman Gonzalez and now the county has been forced to pay for all the injured worker's medical and disability payments.
Working under the colonia improvement fund, the workers poured in thousands of dollars of caliche on Nogal Road where Aroldo Cadriel's shooting range is located. Just after Hernadez became former Pct. 2 commissioner's assistant following the disgrace of Carlos Cisneros, he oversaw the work on that road. Workers used thousands of dollars of road material and labor on the road that leads to the range, but the rest of the road south of the range is void of houses.
Aroldo, as we well know, is Ernie's wife Norman's cousin. He has been charged with murdering a young woman with whom he had a romantic relationship and dumping her body is a desolate rural area.
Her brother Robert Cadriel, a convicted felon, became embroiled in a controversy when a county employee was suspected of taking his civil service exam so he could work for the county as a security guard at Veteran's Memorial Bridge. Acting Human Resources director Robert Lopez resigned immediately after the story became public, as did Cadriel. That case is still being investigated by the county's District Attorney Armanado Villalobos, who himself has been indicted for racketeering and corruption in a case related to the Abel Limas scandal.
After Vallejo left the city, he ended up in the Cameron County Public Works department under Ara, who is under Pete Sepulveda, county administrator. But the incestuous nature of the Ara-Vallejo-Hernandez relationship doesn't end there. Ara's sister, Lavinia Ralston Long, who used to work at Fiesta graphics, Ernie's company, is now the receptionist for Hernandez's Precinct 2 office.
And remember Gilbert Galvan, the county's hapless safety officer who wrecked the county SUV when he failed to negotiate the curve at the intersection of FM 803 and Henderson Road? Well, apprently just after the truck was repaired, accident-prone Galvan had it hit by another car and the vehicle sustained some damage. Back to the repair garage!
Hi sister, Claudia Garza, by the way, works as receptionist at the county warehouse on 14th Street in Brownsville.
And Vallejos' wife, Linda C. Vallejo, also works for the county auditor's office.
His brother was also found a spot on the Cameron Park colonia work crew.
It is apparent that the colonia fund crews and county jobs have become the destination of Hernandez-Ara-Vallejo patronage ring with the predictable results. So what are a few thousands dollars in wasted road materials?
Remember when Ernie's niece â€" Magistrate Patricia Edlestein â€" gave his daughter-in-law Daisy de la Fuente, a former receptionist with the Cameron County Sheriff's Department, a "get out of jail" card after she was arrested after being engaged in a drunken brawl in northern rural Los Fresnos.
De la Fuente, married to Evan Hernandez, Ernie' son, was said to have been clocked traveling more than 100 miles per hour on Highway 100 at approximately 3 a.m. then.
Los Fresnos police chased her and she is reported to have ditched her car and taken off on foot through the bush to elude them,
She then called her friends at the sheriff's department to ask them for a ride. Police found her walking on the side of the road. However, she neglected to tell them that she had left her car to avoid getting arrested by the Los Fresnos PD.
Unfortunately for Daisy, she forgot that she had left her purse and ID in the car and when the Los Fresnos cops went though it, they found out her real identity.
Even with Ernie's pleading, Sheriff Omar Lucio decided he had had enough embarrassment from one of his employees and declined to keep her on board.
Now, as we get ready to elects a Justice of the Peace, what can we really expect from Ernie's daughter Erin Hernandez Garcia but more of the same?
Voters should send a clear message that the tendrils of the Hernandez empire building can't bellowed to continue.
