THE BRADHSHAW TAPES: DISSING ADELA AND THE GOP UNDER THE RADAR...DOES JESSICA HAVE AN EVIL TWIN IN AUSTIN?
---------------------------------------------------------------
By <strong>Juan Montoya</strong><br />Politics can be a dirty business.<br />Just ask any candidate who's thrown his or her hat or bonnet into the political ring. It has often been said that if you want to know who your ancestors were all you had to do was to run for office an you'd soon find out.<br />Nowhere is this more true than in the current race for the Republican nominatio<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQx96tfstubLLxv4pUb3cploKJPSfAX0LvRa0JKR49eA9uW-3NeyW8TzhL6h4TgsMK1DAJqSE2XB1260CPKn185QTc8o0FmOPCOxnWwslf7CE9CvEbSy0OwEnriKkngTQjSJllank4icY/s1600/tapes.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 225px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 220px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5738742959279403666" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQx96tfstubLLxv4pUb3cploKJPSfAX0LvRa0JKR49eA9uW-3NeyW8TzhL6h4TgsMK1DAJqSE2XB1260CPKn185QTc8o0FmOPCOxnWwslf7CE9CvEbSy0OwEnriKkngTQjSJllank4icY/s400/tapes.jpg" /></a>n for the newly-created Congressional District 34.<br />We have come across transcripts of conversations between Jessica Puente Bradshaw and some of her supporters where she states her impressions of her opponent, Adela Garza, currently a Texas Southmost College trustee, Cameron County Republican chairman Frank Morris, and Humberto Zamora, president of a Harlingen development corporation, her campaign worker Roman Perez and others.<br /><br /><em><strong>Morris wants to stay out of it, Zamora wants his due, Adela's shady business...</strong></em><strong><em>Well, does Adela have influence or not?</em></strong><br />"...Frank (Morris, Cameron County Republican Party chair) wants to stay out of it cause he doesn't want to step on any toes. But you have to stand your ground. With Humberto Zamora he's very nice. He is a nice man. He's never done anything wrong to me. <em>Pero</em>, right now he's supporting the other candidate...I really believe that this candidate all the lies that she's making up. She's overstating her influence. You know like, oh I have connections here, I have connections there...so she has some people thinking that that's the case and I'm telling you right now, it's not true. As a matter of fact <em>she has some very shady business going on</em> where she used some of her influence locally to fire some very good people from some very good positions where they would have helped a lot of minorities...<em>Pero</em> she did it for herself because she likes to be smart. CISNEROS CRASHES PARTY; MAKES HASTY RETREAT
---------------------------------------------------------------
<div>By <strong>Juan Montoya</strong></div><br /><div>Either someone neglected to tell Joe Cisneros, a Democratic candidate for Cameron County Sheriff, that the party Wednesday at the corner of 19th Street and Southmost was for his opponent Omar Lucio, District Attorney candidate Luis Saenz and Distr. 34 Congressional candidate Mando Villalobos, or maybe he thought it was an open bash.</div><br /><div>Regardless, soon after he arrived and started meeting and greeting pachanga-goers, he was told in no uncertain terms that this definitely was not his party.</div><br /><div>"I was watching Joe as he arrived and started walking through the crowd and shaking hands when he was approached by one of the organizers and told something in his ear," said a pachanga participant. "He looked surprised and beat has<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtipmCKcNfpR6y8KisbQwXHXDnkYBfZ1k5U9nNJ7oXD5O04nS11qsv8tCiQ70QtVyC72FxqLdcdVfWzTAhyphenhyphenDkbRw0YrJP9YmUM2RHyiByncMwb0COoWyR3eOHJaX4zAnQnaGphqhYMWCk/s1600/joelaw.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 192px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5738389927287506562" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtipmCKcNfpR6y8KisbQwXHXDnkYBfZ1k5U9nNJ7oXD5O04nS11qsv8tCiQ70QtVyC72FxqLdcdVfWzTAhyphenhyphenDkbRw0YrJP9YmUM2RHyiByncMwb0COoWyR3eOHJaX4zAnQnaGphqhYMWCk/s320/joelaw.jpg" /></a>ty retreat out the door."</div><br /><div>Cisneros, whose fortunes have dimmed since he was let go from the Texas Department of Public Safety as a trooper after reported instances of domestic turmoil with his mate and other female partners, has at one time or another worked as a constable, a sheriff's deputy, a court bailiff, and as courthouse security under constable Pete Avila.</div><br /><div>He was let go from that position after he was cited for campaigning on county time. He is appealing the decision before the Texas Workforce Commission and has an unemployment claim against the county saying that it was a case of political retaliation because he was running against Sheriff Omar Lucio. That claim is ongoing and no decision has been reached, according to county sources.</div><br /><div>Meanwhile, his use of a campaign sign where he is held on one leg by a little girl while he bears a holstered handgun on on waist has raised the ire of Lucio's supporters.</div><br /><div>"Why is he wearing a pistol on his belt when he's not employed as a peace officer?," questioned a man at the pachanga. "Isn't he supposed to be a peace officer of the state before he can do that? And what about the little girl? That doesn't look very safe to have a child so close to a handgun."</div><br /><div>The sign of the tall, lanky armed lawmen that Cisneros has favored is an identical replica of one used by Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño, by the way. </div><br /><div>All political controversy aside, few observers give Cisneros a chance of defeating Lucio. Should the race go into a runoff, you can be sure that the whispered rumors about his alleged violent domestic behavior and his employment missteps will be fully fleshed and documented.</div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6016803033174468094-9046214251386416564?l=rrunrrun.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

NO, CINCO DE MAYO IS NOT MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY; IT' WAS THE BEGINNING OF A MEXICAN SENSE OF NATION
---------------------------------------------------------------
<div>By <strong>Juan Montoya</strong></div><br /><div>on May 5, 150 years ago, a ragtag, hodge-podge contingent composed troops from regional forces under the command of a 33-year-old Goliad, Texas-born general, an ambitious colonel from Zacatecas, a ca<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxHcNHUhn2rtIPIpYDSSNhchUEorF_8rCmu8Ev3we0_DuesvWvZBwMSpuNsWF0DsuY-qoiMqQuln7KifBxGTV44tg-KAWU2xGy4tr0SH8HU0ASYswHoLpYFx1JHdP3Qb681LcljPbbvgk/s1600/puebla.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 390px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 260px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5738383619701415874" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxHcNHUhn2rtIPIpYDSSNhchUEorF_8rCmu8Ev3we0_DuesvWvZBwMSpuNsWF0DsuY-qoiMqQuln7KifBxGTV44tg-KAWU2xGy4tr0SH8HU0ASYswHoLpYFx1JHdP3Qb681LcljPbbvgk/s320/puebla.jpg" border="0" /></a>udillo from San Pedro, Texas, conservative armies from Zacatecas and lowly peasant soldiers from throughout Mexico fought as one against a foreign invader.</div><br /><div>There, on the mountains of Puebla and the plains below, they encountered the formidable forces of Napoleon the III's French empire composed of seasoned French troops and African zoauves.</div><br /><div>The French Gen. Charles Ferdinand Latrille Lorencez thought it was going to be a cakewalk (as in the <em>Guerra de los Pasteles</em> a few years before), and leisurely sent his troops to attack the defenders atop the <em>cerro</em> armed with ladders and supported by French artillery, the best available at the time.</div><br /><div>Instead of a decisive battle that would open the doors to the road to Mexico City and occupation of the country, the French would be defeated in their attempts that day.</div><br /><div>Surprisingly, the Mexicans under commander of the Army of the West Ignacio Zaragoza (of Goliad, Texas), the frontal army of Gen. Negrete (of Puebla), the cavalry under Col. Porfirio Diaz (of Oaxaca) and a band of irregulars led by Gen. Juan Cortina (of San Pedro, the Rio Grande Valley, Texas), united with other regional armed groups to defeat the invading army.</div><br /><div><em>"Las armas nacionales se han cubierto de gloria</em>," Zaragoza started his message to Mexican President Benito Juarez.</div><br /><div>"Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence day," said Professor Bernandro Manuel Ibarrola Zamora as he began his presentation before students and other guests at the UTB-TSC Education and Business Complex Thursday. "But why has it gotten to the point that many people think so?"</div><br /><div>And so Ibarrola began a discourse where â" for the space of a little over an hour â" he traced the origins of the battle and its aftermath. The Mexican nation, bred in failed revolutions, empire and regional fragmentation was ill prepared to fight a war against the leading army of the day after it landed in Veracruz along with a Spanish and English fleet to demand payments from the Mexican government after Juarez declared a moratorium on foreign debt following the victory of his Liberal army over the Conservatives in the disastrous Three-Years War, or War of Reform.</div><br /><div>"Mexico was not a nation, as we know it," he said. "It was more of an archipelago of small regions each controlled by their own <em>caciques</em> with little allegiance to the central government. All other nations recognized its weakness."</div><br /><div>And so, Napoleon, wishing to establish a bulwark against U.S. hegemony in <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibawXudx8OF8yxCoWeXLECzHuqM43rALrcqxymo6kyGqhOoKHlxsb_Q15NbIFsPC0X2zaFP_nrEGfIabax0MtwHjp5ijNjPNtMrHDFtFntEHhr-rL1-9vrB2i-eYcjFq8zlZm8RuOlhg8/s1600/cinco.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 300px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 392px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5738383282151864498" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibawXudx8OF8yxCoWeXLECzHuqM43rALrcqxymo6kyGqhOoKHlxsb_Q15NbIFsPC0X2zaFP_nrEGfIabax0MtwHjp5ijNjPNtMrHDFtFntEHhr-rL1-9vrB2i-eYcjFq8zlZm8RuOlhg8/s400/cinco.jpg" border="0" /></a>the Americas, sent his troops under the guise of collecting a debt and set out to install an emperor who would foil the wishes of the U.S. expansionists.</div><br /><div>But the defeat of the 6,600 troops under Gen. Latrille by Zaragoza's 5,000 troops was not thought to be a great victory. Rather, it turned out to be more of a holding action for the eventual defeat of the Mexican defenders of Puebla almost a year later in May 16, 1863.</div><br /><div>But as Ibarrola, a professor in Spain and at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) explained, the battle signified a turning point in the history of Mexico. For the first time â" after failed revolutions and prolonged civil war against their own countrymen â" Mexican soldiers from different regions fought together against a foreign invader...and, to the world's surprise, won.</div><br /><div>"That was really, the meaning of the Battle at Puebla on Cinco de Mayo," he said after his lecture. "It was the first time that the different regional forces thought of themselves as a nation fighting against a common enemy. It all came together on the <em>cerro</em> and plains of Puebla after five hours of battle. That was the real significance of Cinco de Mayo."</div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6016803033174468094-3304378703883745484?l=rrunrrun.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

WHO'S BEHIND ERASMO?: THROWING STONES AT LUIS SAENZ AND LIVING IN GLASS HOUSES

<span style="font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; ">By <strong>Juan Montoya<br /></strong>By now those of us remaining readers of the <em>Brownsville Holler</em> have seen the 1/4 page color ad bashing Cameron County District Attorney candidate Luis Saenz.<br />Among other things, the recurring ad claims that Saenz was investigated by two grand juries and then goes on to list a number of "facts" that include potential criminal deeds attributed not to the candidate, but rather to underlings in his office.<br />For those of us who were here at the time (and the writer of the ad Erasmo Castro obviously was not ) the accu<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUPS95YCReWaD9qsywlzgo8W79C6KEYJLrMVI9PMUmWMOwEhv5cbqmpBGvdH6z7dskN2Bvz5laP4u1BoZ71G8Ac1IEjzNZUiKJTpmEOH2Na6SAcGl2pD6W1Jw7DZ64YZv7UcgPEWpR8a0/s1600/erasmo.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 292px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5737987308252354578" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUPS95YCReWaD9qsywlzgo8W79C6KEYJLrMVI9PMUmWMOwEhv5cbqmpBGvdH6z7dskN2Bvz5laP4u1BoZ71G8Ac1IEjzNZUiKJTpmEOH2Na6SAcGl2pD6W1Jw7DZ64YZv7UcgPEWpR8a0/s320/erasmo.jpg" border="0" /></a>sations against Saenz ring of an amateurish hatchet job concocted by someone who does not know how the sausage was made back then.<br />Castro wouldn't know, for example, that State District (Hanging) Judge Darrell Hester convened a grand jury in March 1995 and appointed Ann Gann as a special prosecutor to investigate possible criminal wrongdoing at the Cameron County district attorney's office, then headed by Saenz.<br />After the two grand juries found nothing to base an indictment of Saenz except to point out that they disapproved of the way he operated his elective office, the juries basically found that there was no actionable causes to raise against him.<br />At the time, one of his office workers, Mary Lou Munivez, had filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against her boss.<br />Later, it was revealed that one of the members of the grand jury was none other than Heriberto (Eddie) Medrano, the attorney representing her in her lawsuit against Saenz. In fact, the foreman of the grand jury was none other than current Pct. 2 Constable Pete Avila.<br />Since the jurors found no indictable offenses, the extraordinary step of the second grand jury issuing a scathing report against Saenz is attributed to the fact that Medrano was a candidate for D.A. in the next round of elections. It would do him no good. He lost to Yolanda De Leon in the Democratic primary.<br />It was, in short, a very politicized grand jury. At the end, Saenz had been thoroughly vetted (by two grand juries) and found to have no punishable offenses. If having an affair in South Texas is a sin, let him without sin throw the first stone.<br />But just who, then is the accuser and why is he (or is he?) paying $940 a shot to the </span><i style="font-weight: normal; ">Brownsville Herald</i> (times 5) to discredit Saenz? Who stands to gain from this hatchet job? Castro, of course, but who else? Who can afford to pay almost $5,000 for Castro to lend his considerable weight to place the ad in his name?<br />Saenz has only two opponents, Carlos Masso and Maria De Ford. Which one? De Ford's people emphatically say they want no part of this circus and (as are many others) are distancing themselves from Castro. That leaves only Masso.<br />So who is this Erasmo Castro?<br />Do you remember all the black-playera clad bunch who suddenly appeared on the local political scene claiming to be a "grassroots community activist" organization under the name of Cheezmeh?<br />Ostensibly with the best of the community in mind, the group attracted some of the local intelligentsia to its ranks at first. Then, as the true colors of the group started to be seen, the smart ones started leaving it in droves. Craig Groves, Jim Barton and wife Nena, and even the Firefighters Association, started the Cheezmeh exodus.<br />Erasmo Castro (because his sister Linda Castro also plays a pivotal role in this also) is the name listed as the registrant of the Cheezmeh website and his address is in Austin.<br />Cheezmeh was a late-comer and piggybacked on the legal groundwork and research done by local blogger Bobby Wightman-Cervantez (<a href="http://www.brownsvillevoice.blogspot.com/" style="font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; ">http://www.brownsvillevoice.blogspot.com/</a>) and Barton (<a href="http://www.meanmisterbrownsville.blogspot.com/" style="font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; ">http://www.meanmisterbrownsville.blogspot.com/</a>) to fight Fly Fronter Airline's applications for incentives from the Greater Brownsville Incentives corporation (GBIC), Brownsville Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) and the Brownsville Public Utilities Board (PUB). The coalition lobbied and protested to get the city to deny the airline's applications for funds and succeeded. City commissioner Melissa Zamora heeded the protestors' calls and spearheaded the effort to deny the applications before the commission.<br />Later, there would be a falling out between the players and acrimony ensued after Erasmo made it clear that he had been the leader against the airline and that credit should go to him as the "Head Cheez."<br />However, the blog used by Fly Frontera did its due diligence on who Erasmo Castro was and found that "a search of the National Criminal Records, Texas State Criminal Records, Cameron, Morris, Smith, Titus and Travis counties criminal records reflect that (he) DOB 01/20/1967, has the following three criminal records:<br /><strong style="font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; ">Erasmo Castro (DOB 1/20/67)<br />* 4/18/1994 - Felony forgery. The attorney for the half-dozen or so plaintiffs? Would you believe Marlene Dougherty, the same lawyer representing their accusers and running against Salazar?<br />In those lawsuits (still pending), Erasmo and Linda Castro, among others, are accused of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise (the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) for ignoring the legal prohibition against notary publics and other uncertified individuals in filling out immigration forms for petitioners and charging fees that are used to keep the enterprise going.<br />(Casess: 1-10-CV-00303, 1:11-CV-00081, US District Court, Southern District)<br />After the Cheezmeh website openly backed Erin Hernandez, Masso and Hinojosa's opponents, Castro blocked the posting of photos showing Saenz campaign events that had were being posted by his supporter Zeke Silva.<br />Gilbet Velasquez, who along with his son Gilbert Jr., had set up the Cheezme<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSR9zLsedQOHctHtcbr4Q4kKAQcDNJsbKewzCHex36pARAp4n8P2hgWcTbJYINdixMBb3hFzWQzqqDi993RuiZzYkdWxwJ5_blmcJe3Aa4EhrMvUrMyb0mywbpTb0nMoa_Flu78Mz8ibg/s1600/erasmo1.jpg" style="font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; "><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5737987530575014626" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSR9zLsedQOHctHtcbr4Q4kKAQcDNJsbKewzCHex36pARAp4n8P2hgWcTbJYINdixMBb3hFzWQzqqDi993RuiZzYkdWxwJ5_blmcJe3Aa4EhrMvUrMyb0mywbpTb0nMoa_Flu78Mz8ibg/s320/erasmo1.jpg" border="0" /></a>h website at no charge believing that the site would be politically neutral and that the Castros would not sell out to politicians, decided they had had enough. Instead, he apparently decided to form an alliance with Saenz's main opponent and lent his name to the newspaper ads against Saenz.<br />What will happen if push comes to shove and Masso and Saenz were to get into a runoff? Will the gloves come off against Masso as they have come off against Saenz and his role in the port's $21 million debacle on the Bridge to Nowhere be fair game? CORTEZ LEGACY ONE OF KEEPING POLITICS IN CLASSROOM AS BISD TRUSTEE
---------------------------------------------------------------
<div style="font-style: normal; ">By <strong>Juan Montoya<br /></strong>How things change when people decide to run for office and forget what kind of trail they have left behind them.<br />Such is the case with former Brownsville Independent School District trustee Ruben Cortez, the ultimate political animal is there ever was one. He is now, of all things, running for a spot on the Texas State Board of Education.<br />His slogan of "Keeping politics out of the classroom," is an insult to anyone's intelligence. This is why.<br />Cortez, who was decisively beaten by Ernique Escobedo in the 201- BISD elections after the electorate decided they had had enough of him and his fellows on the board's majority as they quickly set about to reverse the gains that this suffering border district's teachers and students had sacrificed so hard to attain.<br />Long known as an underperforming district, under Superintendent Hector Gonzales, the BISD went on to win the coveted Broad Award which recognized its improvements over other competitors in the entire United States. The $1 million Broad Prize (increased to $2 million in student scholarships in the BISD's case), was established in 2002 and is the large<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLVf9cZR_MUgHDCTKRtdqkcBR3WKpN7K1_b3KnJbx0oYaIDvi-kfh6vq9vMYB8QW2IjhkWdUMJ73fWuRUPbIeA3ZN-VZm2JWKOzPbmz18_QcCzICDD3rKkyutVyeGBE2OwYn8k6NZqmoA/s1600/cortez.jpg"></a>st education award in the country given to school districts. The Broad Prize is awarded each year to honor urban school districts that demonstrate the greatest <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu5viM2qSmR9VR1KeWEk9nf0MtapilTGlyL7BYeExdJAGtDkYMYLrxrLzvBMzZQc7S5eTltDZLEQlxH0DVauL9MgulH7XO1xqOQ6gQZrzhLHGHT-KGCLRKB0Od8SaS3ADEuys_Jj0lOD0/s1600/cortez.jpg"></a>overall performance and improvement in student achievement while reducing achievement gaps among low-income and minority students.</div><div style="font-style: normal; ">Then the majority set about a construction binge that plunged the districts $128 million reserves into only $68 million which was used to offset the consecutive budget deficits that resulted from their excesses. In one short year, Cortez and his buddies on the board literally took the district from "Broad to Broke."</div><div style="font-style: normal; ">Shortly thereafter, the Council of Urban Boards of Education Annual Award was <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfCi_0T5pWO67tNjp6UKZQ7V3ej4rgr70KF3iLK3JhqL-RbbcDVGaaK2puUKEtJJuOb4VbqbrtAWM5-0l21S2AlMGCSmFrvmH4w5aBh16ETxH04ENSdiQwXorCkpF0au7PIIrc9PyKXy4/s1600/cortez.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 189px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 220px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5737654302292884018" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfCi_0T5pWO67tNjp6UKZQ7V3ej4rgr70KF3iLK3JhqL-RbbcDVGaaK2puUKEtJJuOb4VbqbrtAWM5-0l21S2AlMGCSmFrvmH4w5aBh16ETxH04ENSdiQwXorCkpF0au7PIIrc9PyKXy4/s320/cortez.jpg" /></a>given to the BISD for the board and administration's performance in raising the district's level of instruction. It ain't nothing to sneeze at.<br />CUBE represents more than 100 urban school districts in 35 states and the Virgin Islands. Our member districts educate more than 7.5 million students, in over 12,000 schools, with a collective budget of approximately $99 billion.<br />The judges of the CUBE look at a district's superintendent and the board as an example of a good working relationship. This does not imply a utopian working environment â" but rather that the focus is on student achievement gains in the district, and not the personalities involved. The national panel of judges â" with figures hsowing the BISD's improvements â" chose the district above all others. The BISD was the shining mansion on the hill.<br />All that changed two months later when Cortez and the new board majority decided they wanted to change a couple of things they saw wrong in the district. As the holder of only a high school diploma, he didn't flinch when his new majority decided they didn't want that superintendent (who held a PhD) around anymore because he wasn't making the "right" decisions " on a number of issues.<br />So they fired him.<br />And when the Chief financial Officer recommended that the district award the BISD's lucrative Stop-Loss insurance contract to a company that was not the choice of the majority (Cortez, Rick Zayas, Joe Colunga, Rolando Aguilar), they accused him of misinforming the board and gave the superintendent an ultimatum to either fire the CFO or face firing himself.<br />Using a byzantine system of having some employees file grievances against others to give the majority the justification to terminate them, they are accused in at least one ongoing federal lawsuit and another in state court of conspiracy to manipulate the administrative and political process to get their way.<br />So out went the CFO as well.<br />But, before they could give him the ax, the CFO had gone to the FBI and the U.S Attorney with his sordid tale of a conspiracy among the board and some district employees to rig the bids and of retaliation complete with tape recordings and affidavits from some of the participants to prove it.<br />As of today, Cortez and the members of the majority at the time have been denied qualified immunity from the charges of bid-rigging and retaliation in the federal lawsuit.<br />Rather than fight a losing battle with the former head of the Special Needs Department in another federal lawsuit in federal court who had also become a target of the Cortez majority, the district decided to cut its losses and settle his lawsuit. That administrator is now back with the district.<br />The details in those lawsuits give lie to the claims by the now forgetful Cortez, that his tenure on the BISD board was marked by blatant political favoritism and retaliation against those that stood in his way. It didn't matter that the long-suffering BISD district would end up getting blemished as a result of his actions. To him, it was just collateral damage on his way to higher office.</div><div><i>(We have just learned that Cortez pushed and elbowed his way to a seat on the congressional candidates forum in Hidalgo County until supporters of Celeste Zarate Sanchez questioned why he should be given soapbox when it was limited to congressional candidates. We understand that he has vowed to do the same in the congressional forum to be held in Cameron County today. Sanchez's supporters have promised to prevent him crashing the congressional party at all costs.) </i></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6016803033174468094-4276379192028419604?l=rrunrrun.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

BRADSHAW SUPPORTERS IN DENIAL OF COLD HARD NUMBERS
---------------------------------------------------------------
<div>By <strong>Juan Montoya</strong></div><br /><div><em></em></div><br /><div><em>"You really do just write what anyone tells you, Juanito. $60,000 grand was from her, her hubby and her kids. That's not raising money.</em> "</div><br /><div>Self-righteous (and lying) Bradshaw supporter after last <em>Rrun-Rrun</em> post on Distr. 34 GOP candidates</div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><div>No one can argue that the supporters of hyphenated Hispanic Jessica Puente Bradshaw are not energetic about coming to their candidate's defense.</div><br /><div>They virtually went ballistic after we posted claims by one of her opponents â" Texas Southmost College trustee and field supervisor for U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold Adela Garza â" that raising money to fight against the eventual well-funded Democratic nominee was going to be a necessary attribute for the November general elections.</div><br /><div>The line in Garza's a<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaKFIZsJl0J23wWUPEl22u2n7uxGWXzxyrQDqBPdepUz0_dZeVNvJhAWuSCbJB2d-xFJvEBTieYm2ungMaqEVEzzJGhw6LrUklcRLGukd-xYklVw31tcU6aHst3gO4Tr0VVa2L2WNqdLk/s1600/adela.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5737634646943272770" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaKFIZsJl0J23wWUPEl22u2n7uxGWXzxyrQDqBPdepUz0_dZeVNvJhAWuSCbJB2d-xFJvEBTieYm2ungMaqEVEzzJGhw6LrUklcRLGukd-xYklVw31tcU6aHst3gO4Tr0VVa2L2WNqdLk/s320/adela.jpg" /></a>d that appeared in a Beeville newspaper was that in a late-filed report (as usual) Bradshaw has raised "$1,480 in donations and given herself a $8,500 loan."</div><br /><div>No one disputed that it was true. But that's not what rankled. What they lashed at was the fact that whether by personal loans or by contributions, during this election cycle, Garza has far outraised Bradshaw in contributions from individuals. That she has also used her personal money to run the race would seem to indicate a commitment from that candidate that she is serious about facing the Democrats in November.</div><br /><div>Now, we have been called everything from "convicted drunk" to "idiot," "moron," etc. Please understand that the writers of this blog are not running for anything. If we stopped to examine all of our human foibles, I seriously doubt that it would lead to anything constructive. As far as being a good conservative Republican with the principles and values that the party espouses, I seriously doubt that being unemployed, having a wife support the family while someone is out politicking for a candidate without money would be much of an endorsement or would endear you to the average GOP faithful.</div><br /><div>We prefer to be called moderate Democrats. Without us neither Farenthold, Tony Garza or Carlos Cascos would have been elected. And we've never been exposed to this vituperation from the supposedly civil and gentile GOP. The times, we guess, are a' changing.</div><br /><div>Be that as it may, let's take a look at the claim that $60,000" of the $70,000 raised was from Garza and her family.</div><br /><div>In fact, the Garzas have put personal money in the race to the tune of $42,000, which for a congressional race is nothing but earnest money.</div><br /><div>Compared to the "$1,480 in donations and given herself a $8,500 loan" that Bradshaw has reported, it really is not even in the same ballpark. Granted, we did err in saying she listed herself as a "Realtor" in her campaign literature. We mistook it for her report in the 2010 race where she came in dead last among four unknown candidates and was stuck with a $27,000 debt (all, by the way, loans to herself.)</div><br /><div>Let's ask ourselves: "If no one thinks enough of her candidacy to put their money where their mouth is, how credible a candidate is she anyway?"</div><br /><div>More than $30,000 in the latest contributor report from Garza came from at least 25<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_bK8beZEJdaFhBaOTStp3YATDjAW16OQ1tCR-gGPvuLpfexELzbNsyRMzKlq4V73YH52uDubQlj_RUCPF6Q5NyoM_gBuSTaoRmcowg9eTInnpWccMgfljwRbyr3gqKWNTTX-raCg5oL0/s1600/jess.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 214px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5737633941778747202" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_bK8beZEJdaFhBaOTStp3YATDjAW16OQ1tCR-gGPvuLpfexELzbNsyRMzKlq4V73YH52uDubQlj_RUCPF6Q5NyoM_gBuSTaoRmcowg9eTInnpWccMgfljwRbyr3gqKWNTTX-raCg5oL0/s320/jess.jpg" /></a> donors listed in her timely-filed report. In fact, the Federal Elections Commission's latest listings do not even show Bradshaw's late report.</div><br /><div>Below are the contributors and the amounts in Garza's report. Look carefully. It is basically a list of the GOP Who's Who across South Texas.</div><br /><div>Jose Acedeo - Brownsville - $1,000</div><br /><div>Robert Benz - Bayview - $250</div><br /><div>Frank Boggus - Harlingen - 500</div><br /><div>Doak Dunkin - Harlingen - $478</div><br /><div>Richard Ellis - Brownsville - $325</div><br /><div>Robert Ferris - Harlingen - $500</div><br /><div>James Foster - SPI - $500</div><br /><div>Everardo Garcia - Brownsville - $500</div><br /><div>Paloma Garza - Brownsville - $500</div><br /><div>Rene Garza - Austin - $2,500</div><br /><div>Bill Hudson -Brownsville - $2,437</div><br /><div>Georgina Matz - Harlingen - $500</div><br /><div>John Mayers - Laredo - $2,500</div><br /><div>T.

Are her supporters in denial, or merely fans of a new illusory math that makes one believe that derision and ridicule of the messenger will make up for lack of popular support for their candidate? </div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6016803033174468094-1770223238238867201?l=rrunrrun.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>
