THEN THERE WERE 11 CANDIDATES FILE FOR BISD BOARD
---------------------------------------------------------------
By <strong>Juan Montoya</strong><br />It didn't quite reach the dozen, but there will be 11 candidates running for three positions this November for the Brownsville Independent School District Board of trustees.<br />Places 3, 5, 6, and 7 are up for grabs. <br />Current trustees Joe Colunga and Rolando Aguilar did not file as candidates by Monday's deadline. However, incumbents Catalina Presas-Garcia and Minerva Peña did file for re-election.<br /><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI0imTI5lai-5LUSwTy_MoMGICcaejnKBM4-4baCzSYqYjyq5bUjIr1cAkQJf1-gBJ9ONtjYiKzddWQfaW3rprnBYoThv31l7RqxUMLuqRAlvH8BR2T9d5-FUivGd65002CL2SGKogXas/s1600/electionapple_color.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="279" mda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI0imTI5lai-5LUSwTy_MoMGICcaejnKBM4-4baCzSYqYjyq5bUjIr1cAkQJf1-gBJ9ONtjYiKzddWQfaW3rprnBYoThv31l7RqxUMLuqRAlvH8BR2T9d5-FUivGd65002CL2SGKogXas/s320/electionapple_color.gif" width="320" /></a>Garcia-Presas will face teacher Donald Clupper and retired federal employee Juan Manuel "Butch" Barbosa for Place 5. Peña will face Andres Duran and Shirley Ann Bowman for Place 6. And Blast from the Past, Herman Otis Powers, will face Mary Ray and Argelia Miller for Place 3. Former Porter High School principal, transportation director, Veteran Memorial H.S. principal, and Glass Palace administrator and BISD retiree Jose Hector Chirinos will face Hermelinda Gill Martinez for Place 7.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Voters will have a chance to elect a board majority in November. Christina Saavedra, Luci Longoria and Enrique Escobedo are the only three incumbents who won't have to run for their positions this go-round.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">As the campaigns gear up for the November election, we're sure that the candidates will make their appeal based on their performances in their respective fields. To be charitable, we would rather say that the cup is half-full rather than the other way around when we glance over the qualifications of some of these candidates. Ultimately, it will be the voters who will decide who will sit on the decisions that will affect some 7,000 employees and 50,000 studentns in 57 schools and distribute a $500 million budget.</div>Hopefully, we will chose wisely.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6016803033174468094-655103497309752887?l=rrunrrun.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>
