THEN THERE WERE 11 CANDIDATES FILE FOR BISD BOARD
---------------------------------------------------------------
By <strong>Juan Montoya</strong><br />It didn't quite reach the dozen, but there will be 11 candidates running for three positions this November for the Brownsville Independent School District Board of trustees.<br />Places 3, 5, 6, and 7 are up for grabs. <br />Current trustees Joe Colunga and Rolando Aguilar did not file as candidates by Monday's deadline.&nbsp; However, incumbents Catalina Presas-Garcia and Minerva Peña did file for re-election.<br /><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI0imTI5lai-5LUSwTy_MoMGICcaejnKBM4-4baCzSYqYjyq5bUjIr1cAkQJf1-gBJ9ONtjYiKzddWQfaW3rprnBYoThv31l7RqxUMLuqRAlvH8BR2T9d5-FUivGd65002CL2SGKogXas/s1600/electionapple_color.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="279" mda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI0imTI5lai-5LUSwTy_MoMGICcaejnKBM4-4baCzSYqYjyq5bUjIr1cAkQJf1-gBJ9ONtjYiKzddWQfaW3rprnBYoThv31l7RqxUMLuqRAlvH8BR2T9d5-FUivGd65002CL2SGKogXas/s320/electionapple_color.gif" width="320" /></a>Garcia-Presas will face&nbsp;teacher Donald Clupper and retired federal employee Juan Manuel "Butch" Barbosa for Place 5. Peña will face Andres Duran and Shirley Ann Bowman for Place&nbsp;6. And Blast from the Past, Herman Otis Powers, will face Mary Ray and Argelia Miller for Place 3. Former&nbsp;Porter High School principal, transportation director, Veteran Memorial H.S. principal, and Glass&nbsp;Palace administrator and BISD retiree&nbsp;Jose Hector Chirinos will face Hermelinda Gill Martinez for Place 7.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Voters will have a chance to elect a board majority in November. Christina Saavedra, Luci Longoria and Enrique Escobedo are the only three incumbents who won't have to run for their positions this go-round.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">As the campaigns gear up for the November election, we're sure that the candidates will make their appeal based on their performances in their respective fields.&nbsp; To be charitable, we would rather say that the cup is half-full rather than the other way around when we glance over the qualifications of some of these candidates. Ultimately, it will be the voters who will decide who&nbsp;will sit on the decisions&nbsp;that will affect some 7,000 employees and 50,000 studentns&nbsp;in 57 schools&nbsp;and distribute a&nbsp;$500 million budget.</div>Hopefully,&nbsp;we will chose wisely.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6016803033174468094-655103497309752887?l=rrunrrun.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>
