The Chamber of Commerce has deleted all Paz-Martinez's references from it files. If a Brownsville Herald editor catches a reporter perusing The Paz Files, the latter is immediately fired. The Brownsville Independent School Districts considers all Paz-Martinez's writings deleterious to the mental health of all its students. The board has banned him. Paz-Martinez, in a style that renders the artistic mundane, writes with a toothpick in his mouth. Other times he is spitting out sunflower seeds. If the occasion requires it and it's late at night, he'll throw back a shot of tequila. And he's been known to leave a young thing still panting in bed, rise and write through the night. He'll sometimes open the window on a cold New Mexico night between paragraphs, inhale deeply and resume dancing with his fingers across the keyboard. "Brownsville moves on cooking oil, used in the making of eggs for downtown, Tex-Mex cafes, for those tasty, refried beans, for those killer tamales, for the fucking, Sunday morning menudo," he penned in his off-handed manner. But even his most innocuous prose strikes a chord with the disgruntled mass who are always looking for someone to articulate their thoughts. "In Brownsville, just because it is all we have, every one thinks it's great," opined Jose Martinez, a welder at the Port. "And to whom it may concern: 'One of the reasons why Brownsville is such a shit hole is because very few people will stand up and say it: 'This town sucks! Let's fix it!'" "Where's the city commission?" asked Maria Gonzalez, a Southmost resident. "What's City Commissioner Melissa Zamora saying about why Brownsville is dingy hole? Why doesn't anyone speak up? The mayor could care less." "Corruption is the only business," said blogger Maclovio O'Malley. "Brownsville is the anus of the Valley. You can see it on the map. All the RGV shit rolls that way." "Brownsville people won't admit it, but they buy a new car and they think they're hot shit," echoed Estanislao Contreras, the poet of Chicano Fuck Songs. "They get new clothes and they think they look better. But you can't dress up a pig!" "Wannabes is all you'll find in Brownsville," offered Miguel Hernandez, a student at UTB/TSC. "It is ugly and dirty and loaded with batos who don't work." "Brownsville is a transition zone between the U.S. and Mexico," stated Frank Verdades, a writer. "It's not really all that bad, but it's really not all that good either. Nothing changes in this part of the world except for the faces of the crooks that we call our leaders." Is there any reason to expect Paz-Martinez will change his perspective in rendering Brownsville's reality? Is there any reason to expect that Brownsville will change?
