Now he aspires to be a disaster state-wide.

Jared Hockema, Hinojosa's longtime boy toy, expects to inherit the post from his mentor. Sylvia Garcia-Perez, an angry women with a penchant for cutting balls, has no business leading when she is a lemming. John Shergold is an old-school Democrat. He wants to return the party to its roots. The Brownsville Blues is endorsing the firebrand lawyer. Barton puts the past, present and future regarding the race in the proper perspective.

When Gilberto Hinojosa decided to give up the Cameron County Democratic Chair to run for the state version of that office, it was a godsend for the citizens of Brownsville and Cameron County. Hinojosa has been viewed by many as the poster boy for corruption, backdoor dealing and influence-peddling in Cameron County.

He is closely associated with disgraced Democrats Abel Limas, Conrado Cantu and Jim Solis. The obvious win-win situation would be for Hinojosa in the wake of vacating the county chair to lose in his bid for the state chair.

Jared Hockema is one of three candidates filing for the office. Hockema, a slender, delicately featured young man with a choir boy appearance, replaced Hinojosa recently at the Democrat Party meeting at the VFW hall. The meeting had been scheduled for the candidates to draw their positions on the ballot, but the selection has been postponed until February 3.

Hockema did not waste the opportunity, though. He displayed his expertise to the captive audience, discussing a variety of filing and election issues. Some viewed this as his audition for the job of Cameron County Democratic Chair.

A longtime political observer cautioned his fellow Democrats: "Jared may be personable, but don't forget he is Gilbert's right hand man. He did a lot of Hinojosa's dirty work."

Sylvia Garza-Perez, another candidate for Democratic Chair, was very assertive at the party meeting, several times interrupting Hockema without first asking to be recognized. This was amusing to a group boxing aficionados as Garza-Perez and Hockema seemed to be sparring.

"Sylvia is a very aggressive campaigner," noted the same Democrat. "She has absolutely no qualms about using politiqueras."

John "Roca" Shergold is the third aspirant. He has an enviable reputation for being a stand-up guy.

"He would be a great chairperson," said the vocal Democrat. "My only worry is that he's tried for the position twice and lost."

Voters have an opportunity to steer local Democratic politics in another direction. Selecting a different kind of Democratic Chair would be a start.

The chilangas, born and raised in Tepito in the heart of Mexico City, bring their own version of the blues to Brownsville.

"Our older brother Moctezuma Cuauhtemoc went to school at UT-Austin," said Inca, three minutes older than her sister. "He returned home with a cassette of 'Delta' Dave Handelman. Maya and I couldn't speak a word of English, but we fell in love with 'Delta' Dave's blues. He inspired us to learn English as well as music."

The twins are skipping Christmas with their families in order to thrill the regulars at the Crescent Moon Cantina with their singular interpretations of such legends as Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Hopkins and Little Walter.

"I heard them last year in La Zona Rosa when I was visiting the the capital," said Ben Neece, the Crescent Moon's proprietor. "They blew me away with their sound. Inca plays the guitar and Maya accompanies her on the piano. I close my eyes and I swear that both Stevie Ray Vaughn and Otis Spann have returned to life. These gals won't disappoint."

Their latest CD, Noches Negras, features Muerto en Matamoros, Los Vatos Blues, La Cabrona de Culiacan, Tengo los Azules, Te Mato, Puto! and Eres un Culo, Culero! Muerto en Matamoros has zoomed to number on the Latin charts.

"I write most the lyrics," said Maya. "Inca puts the words to music. Inca married at a young age and had a little girl. I hit the road rather than falling into that trap. Experience is the fount of inspiration. I have a little boy now, but like Inca, the relationship failed. With our kids at home and us on the road, we'll definitely be singing the blues."

"I'll be there," confessed Estanislao Contreras, the controversial poet of Chicano Fuck Songs. "I'm alone and depressed this Christmas. I married a worthless bitch who left me for a young guy. She took my kids and followed him to Tupelo, Mississippi. I could kill her. I'll be in the mood for the blues."

"We usually don't charge, but it cost Inca and Maya a pretty peso to bring their act to the border," apologized Neece whose generosity is often compared to Mother Teresa's charity. "I don't think $50 will be too much for these mamacitas. I said I would never marry again, but I'm thinking about becoming a Mormon and asking both of them to be my wives."

Doors open at seven. The Doc Scully Blues Band with Jim "Balls" Barton on sax will inaugurate the night.
