Shame! Shame!" spat Doug Hardie, the CEO of The Brownsville Herald, the Valley Morning Star and The Monitor. "They don't deserve this recognition. They were liars as reporters and they were liars as individuals. I should have fired each one the day I hired them. I did everything I could to stop their induction, but I couldn't control the politics."

Hardie, know as Dick Hardly to his legion of detractors, was in the distinct minority. Montoya, McHale-Scully, Paz-Martinez and Guevara-Vazquez received 90% of the votes cast. They were surprised by the news.

"If it were a Christmas present, I wouldn't open it," said Montoya.

"Hall of Fame?" said McHale-Scully. "You've got to be kidding. This is bullshit, right?"

"Is this prize similar to the fat chick sitting in the corner of the bar at closing time?" spat Paz-Martinez.

"Keep me out of this!" protested Guevara-Vazquez. "I have enough problems without the attention. I have chosen anonymity. Let me fade in peace."

"They're a self-deprecating, humble lot," opined Tony Gray, part of last year's Hall of Fame class that included James Pinkerton, Robert Rivard and Robbie Sabo. "If they were still writing today, we could say that the Herald was a newspaper instead of toilet paper."

"They're an inspiration to me," added Emma Perez-Trevino, the last of the investigative reporters. "I pine for those days when the likes of Montoya, McHale-Scully, Paz-Martinez and Guevara-Vazquez would cut down politicans at the knees who would plead later for the return of their ankles. These four were adept at getting the answers without wasting their time asking the questions."

"As creative as they were professionally, they were crazy privately," recalled Brad Doherty, the award-winning photographer whose next show "Dead Beavers" is scheduled for a Brownsville opening in the spring.

"We painted Matamoros red in the old days at Blanca White's and other locales. This was long before the Zetas and the Gulf Cartel started painting Matamoros red with human blood. Those were the times of sin and vice. We all gave up confession. We knew the priests wouldn't forgive us because we had no intentions of abandoning our depraved ways. We couldn't get enough. Now we can't get any. Such is life. At least we're still alive."

To nobody's surprise the induction ceremony will take place at the Crescent Moon Cantina. The Doc Scully Blues Band, with the legendary "Delta" Dave Handelman back after a two-month gig in the French Quarter, will provide the entertainment.
