"Both the sounds and the ambiance evoked visions of Woodstock."

Ben Neece's downtown hot spot has quickly become a local institution. It is the musical mecca for Brownsville artists. Neece has created a web site that promulgates the club's mission statement:

"Efforts are underway to bring life to downtown Brownsville. We hope that Brownsville will come to be the jewel of South Texas like it used to be. We at the Crescent Moon Cantina are dedicated to music and the promotion of Brownsville musicians of all levels of achievement."

The Frontera Jazz Quartet is playing every Thursday all December before the group departs on a tour of Austin and Houston during January. "I've played all over the country and I can't think of a place I enjoy more than the Moon. Being back home with my people is a contributing factor, but Brownsville's past, present and future is literally tangible at this locale. I love it."

Neece has bigger plans for the upcoming year, but like the presents under his X-mas tree, he is keeping a tight wrap on both his visions and ambitions. He did make this pitch:

"Let's say, hypothetically, you can't borrow your grandma's van. Your bike has a broken chain and you absolutely must make it to the Crescent Moon Cantina to hear and support local musicians. If you can't make it, check us out at http://www.ustream.tv/. Stay posted on the B.U.R.N. page--Brownsville Urban Radio Network--to listen live. NEW ORLEANS MAYOR PAYS VISIT!

"I'm impressed with Brownsville. This could be quite a downtown if someone with imagination were at the helm."

Landrieu, part of a powerful Louisiana political family, considers himself an amateur historian who dabbles in restorative architecture. He discovered through his readings the historical relationship between New Orleans and Brownsville.

"The similarities are uncanny," said Landrieu. "We have Jackson Square; you have Market Square. We have the St. Louis Cathedral; you have the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. We're on the Gulf of Mexico; you're on the Rio Grande. We have the Garden District; you have the Palm Boulevard District. Our history reaches back to the French; your history originates with the Spanish.

"But there is one striking and, I might add, sad difference. We have realized our potential through the French Quarter. You have this wonderful living museum called downtown and you have frittered away your promise by investing in strip malls and miracle miles. Your leadership lacks creativity."

UTB Historian Dr. Anthony Knopp gave the dignitary and his entourage a walking tour of historic downtown. According to Knopp, Landrieu kept shaking his head as he traipsed the streets from Levee to Madison.

"The mayor couldn't believe his eyes," related Knopp. "He called Brownsville a unpolished jewel. He couldn't comprehend that the community hadn't done a better job at exploiting its treasure trove of buildings."

"Our Chamber of Commerce promotes our zoo, our old cemeteries and a city park with a golfing course within walking distance from downtown," related a slightly tipsy Landrieu who took the stage later in the evening and rendered a jazzy version of Dixie on the keyboards.

"Brownsville has all these amenities, as well as several mueums, and yet this famous city is hardly more than a small dot on the tourist map. You combine all these assets with the diversity of 19th and early 20th century architecture in its commercial structures and private homes and Brownsville is a special place.

"I'm glad that Brownsville is still a well-kept secret. If the truth were known, Brownsville would cost New Orleans business. I'm happy to hear that the special interests rule the border. Their greed works to our advantage. Next round's on me!"
